5 Steps to a Knock-out Valentine’s Day

I’m not even going to try and sugarcoat this – I am not a fan of Valentine’s Day. It probably has something to do with the fact that growing up on a farm gave me limited options in the romance department (read none whatsoever). Of course, this meant that I seldom received the red rose I yearned for which as you can imagine, permanently sullied my belief in Valentine’s Day.

That being said, I am of French descent, so not buying into the Valentine’s hype would be tantamount to being a traitor of love. This year I’m going to make an effort, plan ahead and see where the rose petals fall.

Step 1: Brainstorm ideas

Setting a theme for the day/evening may help with a lot of other decisions. Are you going for an intimate affair at home, a fun-filled adventure date or do you want to model your day/evening around your favourite movie? Or what about the “WOW” factor, get yourself a box from a packaging store that you can pop out of!

Step 2: Decide on eating in or out

If you’re a great cook then knock yourself out and spoil your someone special with delicious food paired with tantalising wine. Plan your grocery shopping at least 3-4 days before incase you need to change the menu. But if being the next Masterchef isn’t your thing, hit the phone at least a week before to make some reservations at your partner’s favourite restaurant.

Step 3: Plan your gift (and card)

You don’t need to spend a fortune on a present especially if you’re going all out for the evening but you do need to give it some thought; balloons with special messages inside or a gift box full of their favourite things would be a considerate alternative to an expensive gift. And don’t forget the card where you tell your partner everything you love about them.

Step 4: Set the mood

From the beginning of the day, set the mood with your partner. Send love notes in their work lunch or messages throughout the day. Make the day all about them.

Step 5: Put your best foot forward

Dress to impress when you’re getting ready for your date. Buy a new outfit and put on your partner’s favourite scent. Be on time and enjoy the time you’re about to spend with your special person.
