The prospect of keeping kids bedrooms and play areas organised can make one want to run for the hills. You know you have to do it, but it just seems so overwhelming. Follow our top 6 tips for organised kids’ rooms:

  1. Before you do anything, it is often helpful to write down the purpose of the room. What do your children actually do in this space (applicable to bedroom or playrooms).

  2. Once you’ve considered the activities, you’ll soon realise that kids rooms and playrooms generally have a lot happening in them. They sleep, work and play here so create zones for each purpose. Don’t place craft supplies together with toys or have them cluttering their homework area.

  3. Limit the amount of stuff you have to the space you have. We love to spoil our kids but realistically, children don’t need much to keep them entertained and having stuff take over their space isn’t a good life lesson.

  4. Storage solutions need to suit the room and the age of the child and it needs to accommodate the many activities that children participate in. Try to choose function over furniture that looks pretty.

  5. Spring clean your child’s room at least 4 times a year to stay on top of the clutter. This extends to their clothes because they grow so quickly! Identify places to donate items to beforehand so you don’t land up with piles of things everywhere else!

  6. Make your children part of the process of keeping their space organised. It is a life skill that needs to be taught.
