This week, it’s time to clear the clutter from children's rooms. I know, I know.. this can be the worst room to organise, and potentially the most demoralising, because it feels as if you'll never get it right. Children's rooms don't have to be a mess if you have the proper systems and storage you need.

Remember to get your children involved in this process if at all possible. Having your children sort through their things, donating what they no longer use, fit into or love, will teach them an important life skill.

p.s. If you don’t have children, you can't take the week off. Go ahead and organise a spare room or volunteer to help a friend who does have children and may need help.

Step 1: Sort

Remove everything from the cupboards.

  • Empty all of the shelves, baskets and drawers, dividing everything into piles.

  • These can be: Keep, Donate, Recycle, Too big, Sell (including broken).

  • Sort through everything, only keeping what your child wears now or will wear soon. For toys, only keep toys that are still in use and are in good condition. If you are keeping clothes for another child, then box this up and label it. Vacuum bags may also be a good option.

  • Clothes that aren't hanging (but could) should be hung up now. Use hangers that are small enough for kids' clothing.

  • If shelves in the cupboard are too far apart, consider using hanging baskets or shelf raisers to make the most of the space.

Step 2: Clean

  • Once your cupboard is empty, wipe down the shelves, doors, etc.

  • Take off all bed sheets and wash these.

  • Dust the mattress and wipe down any other surfaces in the room.

  • Sweep & mop the floor or get carpets cleaned.

  • Try and use natural cleaning agents for youngster's rooms.

  • Remember to also clean toys. Place stuffed animals into a vacuum bag and freeze them for a few days. This gets rid of any dust mites!

Step 3: Organise

Once your cupboards are all sorted, it's time to organise.

  • Understand your space before you begin. If you don't have a lot of hanging space for clothes, get storage bins for easy organising on shelves or what about adding a sturdy (and very versatile) basket and runner unit into the cupboard.

  • Look at the furniture in the space and if you need to change it or find more functional options, then do this before you start organising.

  • Try labeling these in categories like Summer clothes, Winter clothes, PJ's, Undies etc...

  • For organised hanging space, try to colour co-ordinate the items. This is a fun way to get your kids involved as well.

  • Do the same for toys. Keep them in containers that are labeled. This makes it a lot easier to store and clean up. Label them in groups like Lego, Dress Up, Cars, Barbies etc..

  • Try and make it a habit to go through clothes and toys at the start of each new season.

  • You'll find lot's of clothes won't fit anymore and you'll be able to clear a lot of space in their cupboards, keeping it less cluttered.

Remember to DONATE old clothes and toys! This is so important. Hospice shops or shelters are always looking for toys and children's clothes so make sure they're clean and the charity shop will do the rest.

In Conclusion:

  • Your kid's room should be organised and any items you no longer use should be in a bag to be donated.

  • Again, keep items you use often in easy to reach places.

  • Your room should now have everything it needs and all your items should be in good condition.

  • Your room should be fresh and should be organised to perfection. Remember to label and put things back in their correct place!
